Mahatma Gandhi said that “It is impossible for one to be internationalist without being a nationalist. Internationalism is possible only when nationalism becomes a fact”. At SVP we interpret that to mean we can only become citizens of the world when we understand and celebrate our own identity.

An important day to all Indonesians is Hari Kartini, when we can celebrate the efforts of Ibu Raden Ajeng Kartini to change the role of women in Indonesia and allow them the right to learn and study; however, R.A.Kartini also questioned the Dutch colonialism and her efforts for female emancipation were just part of a wider movement for education and rights for all Indonesians. (as indicated in this Jakarta Post article)
In order to celebrate this, SVP had a number of initiatives across the school;
in ECE we had a costume parade, some story telling by Pak Ganjar and a fashion Show and a poetry reading competition, and many students also wore batik.
in Primary we had students dress as their future occupation, (such as police, teachers, engineers and doctors), some career goal setting and a presentation from a famous career and businesswoman, Ibu Yustina. They also celebrated Hari Kartini with a formal flag raising ceremony or Upacara. (though due to infrastructure challenges, they celebrated a day early)
in Secondary all students were given the option of wearing batik for the day, instead of their normal school uniform and celebrated with a formal flag raising ceremony or Upacara.
Our teachers and staff also joined in by wearing batik or kebaya and everyone looked fantastic.
